Keto vs Paleo: Macros vs Food Quality
Keto asks "how many carbs?" Paleo asks "would this food have existed before farming?" They can overlap, but they answer different questions.
Short answer: Not necessarily. Paleo allows fruit, sweet potatoes and honey, which can exceed keto carb limits.
| Compared | Keto | Paleo |
|---|---|---|
| Defined by | Carb limit | Food types |
| Dairy | Yes, full-fat | Excluded in strict paleo |
| Fruit and sweet potato | Very limited | Allowed |
| Honey and maple syrup | No | Allowed in moderation |
| Processed "keto" foods | Technically allowed | Excluded |
| Ketosis | Yes | Not necessarily |
Main difference
Keto does not care whether a food is processed, only how many carbs it has. Paleo does not count carbs, only whether foods are unprocessed and pre-agricultural. You can eat a keto diet of processed foods, or a high-carb paleo diet of fruit and tubers.
Where they agree
Both remove grains, sugar and most processed snacks, and both emphasise meat, fish, eggs and vegetables.
Combining them
"Paleo keto" drops dairy and processed sweeteners while keeping carbs low. It is stricter but gives food quality and ketosis together.
Which to choose
If your goal is ketosis or appetite control, keto. If your goal is eating fewer processed foods without counting, paleo.
