Keto and Alcohol: Low-Carb Drinks and How Alcohol Affects Ketosis

Spirits have no carbs, but that is only half of the story. Alcohol changes how your body uses fuel.

Updated By the Ketora editorial teamHow we write

Short answer: Zero-carb spirits usually do not end ketosis, but they pause fat burning while your body clears the alcohol. Sugary drinks can end ketosis.

Carbs by drink (typical serving)

DrinkServingApprox. carbs
Vodka, gin, whisky, tequila, rum (unflavoured)44 ml0 g
Dry white or red wine150 ml3–4 g
Brut champagne150 ml2–3 g
Light beer355 ml3–6 g
Regular beer355 ml10–15 g
Cider330 ml15–25 g
Margarita or mojitoone glass20–35 g

Choosing a keto-friendly wine

Wine carbs come mostly from residual sugar left after fermentation, so dry matters more than red or white. USDA values for standard table wine are about 2.6 g of carbs per 100 ml for both red and white, or about 4 g per 150 ml glass. Sweet dessert wines run around 14 g per 100 ml, so a small glass carries about as much as a slice of bread.

  • Lowest: brut or extra-brut sparkling wine, dry whites such as Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Grigio, and dry reds such as Pinot Noir and Merlot.
  • Higher: off-dry Riesling, rosé labelled "medium", Moscato, port, sherry and dessert wines.
  • Labels: "brut nature" or "zero dosage" sparkling wine has the least added sugar.

How alcohol affects ketosis

Your body treats alcohol as a priority fuel and burns it before fat. Ketone production may continue, but fat burning slows until the alcohol is cleared. Drinking regularly is a common cause of stalls even when carbs stay low.

Tolerance drops

Many people on keto report feeling the effects of alcohol faster. With empty glycogen stores and lower fluid levels, drink more slowly, alternate with water, and never drive after drinking.

What to order

  • Spirit with soda water and lime
  • Dry wine, a single glass
  • Spirit with diet mixer (check the mixer)

Avoid tonic water (it contains sugar), juice mixers, sweet liqueurs and cocktails with syrups.

Who should avoid alcohol entirely

Anyone taking diabetes medication that can cause low blood sugar, pregnant people, and anyone advised to avoid alcohol for medical reasons.
