Keto Flu: Symptoms, Timeline and What Actually Helps

Keto flu is mostly a fluid and electrolyte problem. Treat it that way and it is usually short.

Short answer: Usually three to seven days, peaking around days two to four. Adding sodium and fluids often shortens it.

What keto flu is

"Keto flu" is the informal name for the headache, tiredness, brain fog, irritability, muscle cramps and dizziness some people get during the first week of a ketogenic diet. It is not an infection. The leading explanation is fluid and electrolyte loss: as insulin falls, the kidneys excrete more sodium and water, and potassium and magnesium can follow.

Typical timeline

DayWhat often happens
1–2Cravings, mild tiredness
2–4Headache, low energy, poor focus — the peak for most
4–7Symptoms ease as fluid balance settles
7+Most people feel normal; persistent symptoms deserve a closer look

Six fixes, in order of impact

  1. Salt your food and drink broth. One or two cups of salted broth a day is the classic fix and works fast for headaches.
  2. Drink to thirst, plus a little more. Pale yellow urine is a reasonable guide.
  3. Eat potassium-rich keto foods — avocado, spinach, mushrooms and salmon.
  4. Consider magnesium from pumpkin seeds, leafy greens or a supplement (check with a pharmacist if you take other medicines).
  5. Eat enough. Under-eating fat while cutting carbs leaves you short of fuel.
  6. Keep exercise light for the first week.

Our electrolyte guide has a homemade drink recipe with the amounts.

When it is not keto flu

See a doctor if you have chest pain, a racing or irregular heartbeat, fainting, vomiting that stops you keeping fluids down, or symptoms that get worse after a week. If you take blood-pressure medication, dizziness on standing can mean doses need reviewing as fluid levels fall.

Frequently asked questions

How long does keto flu last?

Usually three to seven days, peaking around days two to four. Adding sodium and fluids often shortens it.

Can you avoid keto flu completely?

Many people reduce or avoid it by salting food, drinking broth and eating potassium-rich vegetables from day one.

Does keto flu mean I am in ketosis?

Not necessarily. It shows your body is adjusting to lower carbs. Confirm ketosis with a blood ketone reading.
