What is a good GKI for weight loss? Many people on keto for weight loss sit between 3 and 9. Lower values are not required for fat loss.

What the GKI is

The glucose ketone index is your blood glucose (in mmol/L) divided by your blood ketones (mmol/L). Because it combines both, it moves more clearly than either reading alone. It was proposed in research on therapeutic ketogenic diets; for general keto use it is a tracking metric, not a diagnostic test.

GKI ranges

GKIDescription
Below 1Very deep ketosis — typical of extended fasting
1–3Deep ketosis
3–6Moderate ketosis
6–9Light ketosis
Above 9Not in meaningful ketosis

Measuring correctly

Take glucose and ketone readings within a few minutes of each other, ideally in the morning before eating. Convert mg/dL to mmol/L by dividing by 18. Ketora calculates GKI automatically whenever you log both readings and charts it over time.
