How Long Does It Take to Get Into Ketosis?

Usually two to four days on strict keto. The exact time depends on how full your glycogen stores are when you start.

Updated By the Ketora editorial teamHow we write

Short answer: Sometimes, especially with fasting or long exercise on top of very low carb intake. Most people on keto take two to four days.

The short answer

SituationTypical time to reach 0.5 mmol/L blood ketones
Strict keto (under 20 g net carbs)2–4 days
Looser low carb (30–50 g)3–7 days, sometimes longer
Water fastOften 24–48 hours
Back on keto after one high-carb mealOften 1–3 days
After a week or more off ketoSimilar to starting fresh

These ranges vary between people. Treat them as expectations to test with a reading, not as rules.

Why it takes days, not hours

Ketone production rises once liver glycogen runs low and insulin falls. Someone who ate a high-carb dinner and exercises little starts with full stores, so it takes longer. Someone who trains and eats few carbs empties them faster. That is why two people starting on the same day can enter ketosis days apart.

What speeds it up

  • Keeping net carbs under 20 g from day one rather than tapering down.
  • Exercise, especially longer sessions, which uses up muscle and liver glycogen.
  • An overnight fast of 14–16 hours, if that suits you — see intermittent fasting and keto.
  • Enough protein but not excessive amounts — protein is not the enemy, but very large protein-only meals can slow early readings slightly.

What slows it down

  • Hidden carbs in sauces, coffee drinks and "keto" snacks with maltitol.
  • Frequent small amounts of fruit.
  • Alcohol, which the body clears before burning fat.

How to know you are there

Symptoms are unreliable. A blood ketone reading of 0.5 mmol/L or more, taken in the morning, is the clearest confirmation. Breath meters and urine strips give useful hints in the first week. See how to measure ketones.

A practical first week

  1. Day 1: set a 20 g net-carb ceiling and salt your food.
  2. Days 2–4: take a morning reading each day.
  3. Once you read 0.5 or more on two mornings in a row, you are in nutritional ketosis.
  4. Keep logging — the weekly pattern matters more than the first positive reading.

Frequently asked questions

Can you get into ketosis in 24 hours?

Sometimes, especially with fasting or long exercise on top of very low carb intake. Most people on keto take two to four days.

Why am I not in ketosis after a week?

The most common reasons are hidden carbs, a higher carb limit than intended, or alcohol. Log everything for three days and check readings in the morning.
