Keto Cheat Day: What Happens and How to Get Back on Track
One high-carb day will not undo weeks of progress. Treat the scale jump as water and get back to your routine the next morning.
Short answer: Usually one to three days of strict carb restriction, sometimes faster with exercise or a short fast.
What a cheat day does
- Ketosis pauses. Blood ketones usually fall below 0.5 mmol/L within hours of a large carb load.
- Glycogen refills. Muscles and liver store carbohydrate with water.
- The scale jumps. A rise of 1–2 kg the next morning is mostly that water, not fat.
- Cravings return for a day or two in many people.
How long recovery takes
Most people are back in ketosis within one to three days of returning to a strict carb limit. Some people get mild keto-flu symptoms again, though usually shorter than the first time.
A 3-day reset
| Day | Do this |
|---|---|
| 1 | Return to under 20 g net carbs at breakfast. Salt food, drink water and broth. Optional 14-hour overnight fast. |
| 2 | Keep protein at target. A walk or longer workout helps use up glycogen. Morning ketone reading. |
| 3 | Morning reading again. Once at 0.5+ you are back. Compare weight to your weekly average, not yesterday. |
Should you plan cheat days?
There is no evidence that planned cheat days help fat loss on keto, and for some people they restart cravings. If you want flexibility, a single planned higher-carb *meal* is easier to recover from than a whole day. If you find you cannot stop once started, a lower-carb diet with a higher limit may suit you better than strict keto with regular breaks.
Who should not "cheat"
People using keto under medical supervision — for epilepsy, or with diabetes medication — should follow their care plan rather than taking unplanned breaks.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to get back into ketosis after a cheat day?
Usually one to three days of strict carb restriction, sometimes faster with exercise or a short fast.
Did my cheat day make me gain fat?
The next-day jump is mostly water stored with glycogen. One day of overeating adds little fat compared with the scale change.
